Comment: This was part of a larger column. The three women are believed to be the Graces or perhaps just dancers.
Delphi 023 * This is marker showing the 'Omphalos'. Ancient Greeks believed this spot to be the navel of the universe, citing a myth were Zeus released two eagles, one from the East, the other from the West, and they met over Delphi. * 1600 x 1200 * (791KB)

Delphi 024 * 'Argive Twins'. Statues created in memory of two youths from Argos who, lacking an ox, carried their mother in an ox-cart to a festival of Hera. After falling asleep from exhaustion their mother prayed that they would receive 'that which is best for a man to receive'. They never awoke the next day. This idea of dying a youthful, but glorious death, was very popular. [Museum of Delphi] * 1600 x 1200 * (283KB)

Delphi 026 * Chryselephantine statue (gold and ivory). The black stuff is actually ivory! Some other pieces looked like broken wood. Some think this is Apollo. * 1600 x 1200 * (392KB)

Delphi 027 * More fine goldwork * 1600 x 1200 * (412KB)

Delphi 028 * Apollo w/ lyre pouring a libation. The description cited a myth involving Apollo and a lover of his, which I wasn't familiar with (that mentioned the raven) but did not explain why it was there. * 1600 x 1200 * (312KB)

Delphi 030 * This Omphalos (see earlier picture) was placed on top of the preceding statue with the three women. * 1600 x 1200 * (370KB)

Delphi 031 * Delphi's Charioteer. Made from a modified 'lost wax' method where the original was roughly sculpted in clay and then surrounded by a detailed layer of wax. This wax was then covered with another layer of clay. By melting down the wax and filling the resulting cavity with bronze, a hollow statue could be made. * 1200 x 1600 * (319KB)

Delphi 032 * Reconstruction * 1600 x 1200 * (443KB)

Delphi 033 * View from lunch -the Corinthean gulf. * 1600 x 1200 * (259KB)

Delphi 034 * The gulf from further back * 1600 x 1200 * (339KB)
