BrauMar 001 * These pictures are from a class trip to Brauron and Marathon (sites in Attica, I will explain as we go). This is one of a few landscape pictures from around Brauron, a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis. * 1600 x 1200 * (575KB)
BrauMar 002 * This is a relief showing a family or group giving a goat to Artemis. We know she is Artemis because of the accompanying deer (in addition to hunting and protecting young girls Artemis was also a goddess of the 'wilds'). * 1600 x 1200 * (437KB)
BrauMar 003 * 1600 x 1200 * (398KB)
BrauMar 004 * 1600 x 1200 * (592KB)
BrauMar 005 * The (rebuilt) remains of the temple. Young girls would come here for initiation rites, after which they could be married. * 1600 x 1200 * (661KB)
BrauMar 006 * Back rooms * 1600 x 1200 * (921KB)

BrauMar 007 * Unlike most sites we could go in and pretty much walk right up to everything. Very cool * 1600 x 1200 * (700KB)
BrauMar 008 * 1600 x 1200 * (869KB)
BrauMar 009 * 1600 x 1200 * (474KB)
BrauMar 010 * The grounds sure are nice... * 1600 x 1200 * (709KB)
BrauMar 011 * Close up of a column * 1600 x 1200 * (602KB)
BrauMar 012 * An early bronze age cemetary near the Marathon museum. Some people think this site and a few others were the inspiration for the 'tholoi' tombs at Mycenae and others (see Treasury of Atreus, Argolid trip). This cemetary was built up as a large mound of earth like the tholoi and also contained some graves with shared features, like this long entranceway. * 1600 x 1200 * (413KB)

BrauMar 013 * This is the 'new' way of showing sites. Everything is covered and protected from the elements and visitors can look down on on the site from walkways without disturbing anything. * 1600 x 1200 * (437KB)
BrauMar 014 * We tried to go out and visit a tholos near the museum but it was locked (the entrance is on the left). There was this cool tree though * 1600 x 1200 * (796KB)
BrauMar 015 * Around Marathon now. This plain was where the Athenians defeated the Persians in a great land battle ~490 BC. They were significantly outnumbered but ended up victorious due to heavier armor, longer spears, and no doubt, a greater will to win. * 1600 x 1200 * (463KB)
BrauMar 016 * Marathon was full of almost superhuman feats, some even outside of battle. Phidippedes, a long distance runner, ran to Sparta in a single day to ask for help. He then ran back to Marathon and ran the 26 miles to Athens, giving us our modern Marathon distance. One professor of ours highly doubted the accuracy of the text (he thinks it was written later) but I prefer to disbelieve him rather than crush all hope. The Sparta run was doubted until a 'Spartathon' was completed a few years ago. It is around 125 miles. A world-reknowned Greek runner completed it in just under 27 hours. This gives an average of just over 13 minutes a mile, up and over a mountain range. * 1600 x 1200 * (348KB)
BrauMar 017 * Oops, out of order. I'll have to go back and fix that. These are from a temple to Egyptian (!) gods built near Marathon in Roman times. * 1200 x 1600 * (313KB)
BrauMar 018 * Part of a snake relief * 1600 x 1200 * (345KB)
