Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 019 * Graffiti and other marks on the inside of a column. I think that the 'three-lined' image is Christian but I could be wrong. * 1200 x 1600 * (686KB)

Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 023 * This is the Hephaestion, a temple in the agora devoted to Hephaestus and maybe Athena. We got to go in here too but I forgot to bring my camera. We don't know much about its ancient use but at one time it was used as an early christian church. At that time they remodeled the roof, changing it to a barrel vault style. This type of roof is like an arch that spans between the two walls. It has a tendency to push the walls apart (which it is doing) eventually losing support and collapsing. It is for this reason that modern visitors aren't allowed to go inside. Our professor of course told us this when we were standing UNDER it! * 1600 x 1200 * (367KB)
