Comment: The women on the right are removing iron clamps from a column drum. These clamps were used in previous modern restorations. The rusting/oxidizing iron expanded over the years though, and cracked the nearby marble. It's funny that the ancient Greeks knew this and coated their clamps in lead instead.
Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 003 * These pictures are from a class visit to the Acropolis and showing my friend Oliver around Athens. This is a reconstruction of a freize on the Parthenon showing the competition of Poseidon and Athena for the patronage of Athens. Poseidon created a spring and Athena an olive tree, which you can see in the back. She won. * 1600 x 1200 * (436KB)

Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 004 * This is another frieze reconstruction showing the birth of Athena from Zeus' head. Hephaestus is in the back with an axe (after having just cracked open Zeus' head with it) while the other gods look on. The myth has to do with Zeus swallowing Athena's mother (named Metis or Mind) to prevent a prophecy that her daughter/son would be more powerful than the father. So, he swallowed Metis, eventually producing Athena, fully armed, from his skull. * 1600 x 1200 * (314KB)

Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 005 * Athena and Poseidon again, but further back. * 1600 x 1200 * (376KB)

Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 006 * These pictures are from a class visit where we got to go INSIDE the Parthenon :-). The black grime is a type of lichen from pollution. * 1600 x 1200 * (371KB)

Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 007 * Using a crane to move a column drum * 1600 x 1200 * (504KB)
