Acropolis, Oliver's Tour 023 * This is the Hephaestion, a temple in the agora devoted to Hephaestus and maybe Athena. We got to go in here too but I forgot to bring my camera. We don't know much about its ancient use but at one time it was used as an early christian church. At that time they remodeled the roof, changing it to a barrel vault style. This type of roof is like an arch that spans between the two walls. It has a tendency to push the walls apart (which it is doing) eventually losing support and collapsing. It is for this reason that modern visitors aren't allowed to go inside. Our professor of course told us this when we were standing UNDER it! * 1600 x 1200 * (367KB)

OliMuseum 002 * This picture is from a march that is done every November 17th to remember the death of some Athenian polytechnic student protestors in 1973 by the miltary (Greece was under the control of a junta at the time). This incited revolution, eventually leading to the restoration of democracy. The American government, at the time, supported the controlling colonels. Because of this, the march ends at the American embassy. In recent years the march has expanded to include peaceful protests about American globalization and capitalization. Anarchists have also used the day as an opportunity to advance their cause. We were told to try and avoid certain 'hot spots' but the march ran down the main road in front of our apartments, effectively cutting us off. We eventually found a way around though. * 1600 x 1200 * (449KB)
