Sigma Phi Alpha of New York

Brothers with Union College President Stephen Ainlay

Brothers with Union College President Stephen Ainlay

Sigma Phi began on the fourth floor of North College, in a dormitory, in Union College. Later the society moved to the Pepperbox on 5 Yates Street. In 1906, Sigma Phi moved to The Place, at 1 Library Lane. The Place was the first actual residence of Sigma Phi, since no brothers actually lived within the Pepperbox. In recent years, Sigma Phi has taken residency in Davidson South and 10 University Avenue. The Union College chapter is the longest active chapter of a social fraternity in the nation. One of the most notable aspects of Sigma Phi is its distinction as the first social fraternity to form chapters at multiple schools. In 1831, Sigma Phi established a chapter at nearby Hamilton College, when two young men from Hamilton transferred to Union College for a semester to study under the renowned Dr. Eliphalet Nott. This made Sigma Phi the first fraternity.
