Chapter History

At Union College, the interest for a different social, cultural and a community-oriented outlet was growing among the women of color. In 1993, contact was established with the sisters of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. on the SUNY Albany campus. Consequently, several women from Union College and SUNY Albany were inducted into the membership process of SIA in the Spring term of 1994. On May 5, 1994, four women, Lisa (Hermana Atrevida) Caraballo, Noris (Hermana Vida) Garcia, Sandra (Hermana Amable) Perez and Terry (Hermana Asha)Scotland, became the founding sisters of the NU Chapter at Union College.

During the 1994-95 academic year, the sisters of Union College and SUNY Albany worked together as one chapter. In February of 1995, the sisters of Union College attained associate membership into the Panhellenic Council. By attaining membership into the Panhellenic Council, the NU Chapter was officially recognized by Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. At this point, the NU Chapter became an independent chapter.

On September 29, 1995 La Linea Persevarando y Unidad became the Alpha line at Union. These women were Sunil (Hermana Fleur) Sampson and Kimberly (Hermana Deportista) Sanabia.

On April 19, 1997 the NU Chapter recognized its Beta line, Sonrisas Valerosas, which was composed of Julissa (Hermana Risitas) Rosario.

On April 25, 1998 the NU Chapter recognized its Gamma line, Las Estrellas Soberanas, which was composed of: Jennine (Hermana Exuberante) Rodriguez, Tannya (Hermana Murmullo) Miranda, Yurkis (Hermana Mayimba) Mercedes and Yazmin (Hermana Consoladora) Del Valle.

On April 28, 1999 "Enlightened and Victorious with One Mind" was recognized as the Delta line of Nu Chapter. Melinda Modest, Hermana Ilustrada is the one strong individual to carry this line.
