Union Engineering is entering a vehicle into the SAE Robot Challenge. In previous years, it was purely a walking machine competition (as evidenced by the SAE web page address), but it has now been expanded to be goal-based rather than requirement-based. The current robot should be "capable of performing a variety of tasks, such as research, retrieval or rescue in any environment including urban buildings, industrial plants, construction areas, mines, caves and archaeological sites" (Challenge Rules) Another major change is that the machine cannot have an operator nearby. The robots must operate either autonomously or relay information to a "distant" operator for remote control.
