Vocal Polyp/Nodule
Nodules and polyps can be handled surgically and/or behaviorally.
It is typically behavior that needs to modified after a vocal polyp develops. Many patients that opt solely for surgery tend to redevelop polyps or nodules because the behavior that created them in the first place was not rectified. Voice therapy is usually completed with a speech pathologist and includes the correction of abusive vocal behaviors, the instruction in proper vocal hygiene, and treatment to increase proper voicing.
A surgical approach is only called for in extreme situations where the polyp or nodule is very large or has been a present for a long time. This procedure is fairly simple and consists of the surgeon extracting the vocal polyp or nodule laprascopically.
