Dysarthria Diagnosis

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder which is caused by nerve damage. There is a broad range of dysarthrias including spastic, flaccid, ataxic, unilateral upper motor neuron, hyperkinetic and hypokinetic. These are all caused by the damage of separate nerves and cause a variety of different syndromes.

Diagnosis:

Dysarthria is initially characterized by aphaisia, also known as the inability to articulate correctly. Dysarthria does not only cause symptoms in the resonators, but in the respiratory and laryngeal components of the vocal mechanism as well. Therefore, respiratory problems as well as a complete inability to achieve phonation are symptoms as well. Finally, swallowing problems, also known as dysphagia, are occasionally present in this disorder as well.
