Etymology

Description

Podcast

This is my catch all term for podcasts which do not yet have their own genre or for those which are truly podcasts.  Example: Blooper or Behind The Scenes episodes in podcast feeds.

Podella

Podcast + Novella A single or multipart piece which exceeds approximately 10 minutes in length and is less than a book’s worth of material.  Example: The weekly episodes of Escape Pod.

Podflash

Podcast + Flash (Short) Story A single piece which is less than approximately 10 minutes in length.  An alternate description is a piece of less than 1000 words.  Example: Voices of Tomorrow.

Podiobook

Podcast + Audiobook Derived from the website Podiobooks.com, this genre is for single or multipart pieces which would constitute a book.  Usually a podiobook episode corresponds to chapter or set of chapters, though in some cases a chapter may be split into multiple episodes.  Example: Offerings from Podiobooks.com.

Podioplay

Podcast + Audioplay

A single or multipart piece which is in the form of a radio play, including multiple voice actors, sound effects, and a plot.  This is not to be confused with a podiobook, which can also have these qualities, but was originally designed as a book.  Example: Children of the Gods.

Poditorial

Podcast + Editorial A single piece that constitutes a spoken or read editorial, such as those found in newspapers like The New York Times.  Example: Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica episodic commentaries (found here).
Podmo Podcast + Promo

The most recent of genres which was created upon discovery of Darker Projects.com and is used to describe podcast promotions (including some initial explanatory podcasts).  Example: Promotional material from DarkerProjects.com.

Podologue Podcast + Monologue

For things like “The Failed Cities Monologues.”  I would note that there are instances where Podella is used instead, as podcasts tend to favor people speaking or thinking to themselves.  Example: The Failed Cities Monologues.

Podthology Podcast + Anthology

Used to describe self-enclosed sets of podcasts (usually from Podiobooks.com) which are actually a selected set of podellas and podflashes by one or more authors.  Example: Voices: New Media Fiction.
