Faculty Corner
Over the summer faculty members will be busy with research, travel and study projects. Professor Ibon Izurieta is preparing two conference papers, one for the Midwest Modern Language Association Conference in St. Louis and, one for a conference in Ottawa organized by the Spanish Embassy. His work is on the issues of nationalism, especially Basque nationalism, and the re-making of modern Spain in the years after 1898 and the crisis caused by the loss of the empire. Professor Martha Huggins will be traveling to Brazil at the end of the summer for a book signing and "launching" of her new work which will be appearing in both English and Portuguese editions, Political Policing: The United States and Latin America (Duke University Press and Cortez Editora). She will also be preparing conference papers for meetings in Mozambique this summer and at the Latin American Studies Association Congress in Chicago in the fall. Professor Teresa Meade will be continuing to put together the program for the Berkshire Conference on the History of Women (Rochester, June 1999). The program committee and the co-chairs received a record number of proposals for the conference from all over the world, with an especially high number both from and pertaining to the history of Latin American women. More information on the conference, which regularly draws 3-4,000 participants, can be found on the website: www-berks.aas.duke.edu Have a nice summer. See you in the Fall. |
