Campus Events
This spring the LACS faculty taught a class on Latin America for
the Union College Academy for Lifelong Learning (UCALL). This series of
five lectures directed toward senior citizen-learners covered the
history, culture and politics of Latin America. In addition, faculty
members contributed to the College-wide "Dialogues on Race" by
presenting several events, including "150 Years of US Imperialism,
1848, 1898 to the Present," "Latino Stereotypes," and a
trip to lobby the state legislators in Albany as a part of the
statewide April 28 "
Farmworker Advocacy Day".
A highlight of spring events was a trip to New York City to see John
Leguizamo's Tony Award nominated Broadway show, "Freak".
Over thirty students took advantage of the theater, some good Brazilian
food, and Leguizamo's wild "deconstruction" of Latino culture thanks to
the Spanish Club, History and Modern Languages
departments and the Intellectual Enrichment Grant.
Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc. organized the Schenectady
Latino Festival for Saturday, May 16. Spearheaded by Union
students and co-sponsored by Schenectady Hispanic Outreach Services,
the Union College Admissions Office, churches and other community
groups, the Festival showcased the growing importance of Latinos
in Schenectady and the Capital District. Festivities include dances,
educational booths, prizes, a raffle for a UC scholarship, other fun
and educational events for all ages.
