Winter '99 Course Listing History HST 61: Europe and America in the Era of Columbus (Winter; Meade). A study of Spain and Portugal, their conquest of the Americas, and the interaction among European indigenous, and African societies in the social development of Latin America. GenEd: Eu-C, CD-AA, CD-LA; WAC: W1. HST 77: History of Brazil (Winter; Meade). A general survey course covering the history of Brazil from the period of the Portuguese conquest to the present. GenEd: CD-AA, CD-LA; WAC: W1. Performing Arts AMU 35: Music of Latin America (Winter; Olsen). Latin American music-cultures approached through live performance, lecture, video, and audiotape. Survey samples from folk, popular, and classical traditions, with special emphasis on the music of Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. No prerequisite. From the tango to the cha cha cha to the macarena, from Carmen Miranda to Desi Arnaz to Selena, Latin American music and culture have long found their way into American life. CD-LA, CD-AA; WAC: W1. Political Science PS 141: Religion and Politics (Winter; Nichols). An inquiry into the impact of religious belief systems and religious institutions on political behavior. A specific comparison of the impact of Protestantism in the U.S., Roman Catholicism in Latin America, and Islam in the Middle East. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or PS 11 and 12. Spanish SPN 130: Introduction to Spanish and Spanish American Literature: (Winter, Moyano). Close reading of fiction, drama, and poetry, with particular attention to the techniques of literary analysis. Readings will be chosen from all periods.
