Martial Arts Style

While there is no end to the variety (and quality) of martial arts taught in the United States, there is general agreement that five main styles embody the spirit, traditions and proven techniquesof Japanese Karate-do ("the way of the empty hand").

The Union College Karate Club offers a traditional school with roots in Japanese Shito-ryu. Our branch is called Shukokai, which roughly translates as "the way for all". In general, emphasis is placed on brains over brawn, effective (as opposed to flashy) technique, and variety of practical self-defense moves which incorporate elements of judo. Today Shukokai has thousands of practitioners in more than thirteen countries throughout the world.
