For some ECP members, merely playing the sport was not enough. Every aspect of the game needed to studied, from disc aerodynamics to game simulations.
Pat Allen examined the movement of air around a flying disc using Partical Image Velocimetry. Normally used to study the aerodynamics of cars, a PIV system uses a digital camera, a smoke generator, and a wind tunnel to find the air velocities around a Frisbee in flight.
