Scheduled Server Downtime
All services should be back to normal after tonight's scheduled downtime. Four new batteries were added to the UPS running the core servers. This should help keep the servers running during times when the power goes out for a short period of time.

Scheduled Server Downtime
We will be upgrading the batteries in our backup system this Tuesday, April 21, around 7PM. During this time, none of Virtual U's services will be available. We hope that this downtime will last no longer than one hour. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Power Outage and Air Conditioner Failure
There was a power outage on Saturday, July 5th. Following the restoration of power, the air conditioner in the machine room failed, and was finally repaired today. Due to the extreme heat in the room, we decided to leave the primary systems shut off until the air conditioner was fixed. As of now, all services seem to be restored. Please email us if anything seems to not be right.

Automatic Email Archival
A new mail archival program will be run every June, September and December, to ensure that our mail spool partition does not fill up. It will move old messages in your "inbox" to a file within the "mail_old" folder inside your home directory. "Old mail" means read messages older than six months, and all mail older than three years.
Opting-out: To disable automatic email archival, run
touch $HOME/.vu-archiv-mail-off
If you opt-out, please be sure to keep your mail spool clean.
Restoring archives: Archived mail files can be restored to your "inbox" by running a command similar to the following:
zcat $HOME/mail_old/$LOGNAME_2007-Nov06.gz >> /var/mail/$LOGNAME
Alternatively: move the decompressed archive to your $HOME/mail directory
to view old mail as a "folder" within most email programs.

Restoration of Archived Data
This service message applies to alumni and faculty.
We've restored a number of old mail spool files and home directories to our primary user file system, in an effort to consolidate data and make space for a new backup system.
You may find duplicate or very old emails in your mail spool.
If you find an "OLD_DATA" directory in your file space, this contains what we had saved from the "old" VU array (circa 1998-2003).
A good amount of data has been restored for accounts that no longer have logins to the system. This data will be owned by root until the owners request to have their accounts re-activated.
Apr. 13, 2008
Shell Lock-outs
This service notice is only regarding terminal access via SSH.
We've been scanning our system for insecure passwords, and have disabled shell logins for certain accounts.
If you try logging in and are given a lock-out message, please write to us and we will help you get your shell access back.

All Email Rejected March 25th-mid 26th
The relays.ordb.org server that we had in our mail configuration recently began blacklisting ALL IP addresses, as a way to remind the world that their service is no longer available.
Consequently, mail sent to VU email addresses on March 25th and up until noon on the 26th was rejected by our mail server. There will be no attempts to re-deliver the email.
We've updated our RBL checklist to use services that are currently available: zen.spamhaus.org, bl.spamcop.net, dnsbl-1.uceprotect.net, new.spam.dnsbl.sorbs.net, dyna.spamrats.com
Your email should be working at this time; we apologize for the inconvenience.

Service Outage 5-8:00pm
Our filesystem server went down unexpectedly for a few hours this evening. Most services were affected by the outage. At this time, all services are back to normal.
We believe this problem to be the same one that we experienced on March 7th and earlier dates. Run the command: vu-news 20080307 for details.
Now that the system has been rebooted and the potential fix has taken effect, hopefully we will not experience this problem again.
Mar. 7, 2008
Service Outage 7-10:30pm
Our filesystem server went down unexpectedly for a few hours this evening. Most services were affected by the outage. At this time, all services are back to normal.
We are continuing our investigation of a potential APIC/IPv6/SMP/Hyperthreading issue that may be causing the rare and randomly occurring kernel panic and netdev watchdog timeout errors that result in the service outages.
Fortunately, this particular bug is not disk or filesystem-related, so these occasional outages should not have an affect on data integrity of the system. Still, we will be experimenting with disabling certain kernel-level features to see if we can squash this bug. These experiments may require reboots, which means that there may be some very short (less than 10-minute) service outages again in the near future.
As always, we thank you for your patience and support.

Network Migration
The remaining VU2002 hosts (vuser, virtual, admin) migrated this afternoon from the old VU IP space on the Union network (149.106.154.xxx) to the new IP space (149.106.193.xxx).
It may take some time for the new addresses to propagate through DNS.
A number of VU2002 and VU1998 hosts were removed from Union DNS, since they no longer exist. This includes: chewbacca, obiwan, journal, stream, and the ppp hosts (ppp31 through ppp122 and ppp/moof and ppp2/wopr)
Most users are now using the VU2007 hosts and should not be affected by this change.

Retirement of the "Virtual" Web Server
This is a follow-up to November 22's notice (view it using the command: vu-news 20071122).
The old VU web server will be taken offline in a few days. No action is required on your part unless your website explicitly depends on the "virtual" host in some way or another.
If you have links on your website that refer to Virtual, please change them. Here is a table that you can use to determine how to change your references from the old web server to the current web server:
| Name 1 | Name 2 | IP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| OLD | virtual.vu.union.edu | virtual.union.edu | 149.106.154.11 |
| NEW | web.vu.union.edu | www.vu.union.edu | 149.106.193.12 |
Note that if your links are currently using any of the names listed on the "new" row, you do not need to make any additional changes.
Questions? Write to vu-admin at vu.union.edu.

Projects is now on the Union Network
The host called "projects" is now available on the Union network. Projects is a system designed to host many virtual private servers.
You may now request your own VPS by writing to vu-admin at vu.union.edu. We will create the server for you and provide you with an IP address and a root password.
The benefit of having a VPS is that you have full control of the system, and you can use it for whatever you want. And while you have root, the system is also pre-configured to work with your regular VU account.
You may even request a domain name (yourname.vu.union.edu) for your system, so that you can easily access it from anywhere.
VPS use is covered by the VU and Union AUPs and we reserve the right to monitor your system and ensure that it is secure and satisfies Union policy.

VU Meetings, Winter 2008
VU is now meeting regularly on Tuesdays at 9pm. Meetings last for about an hour. Join us in the Machine Room!
The VU/Machine Room (S014) is easy to get to, but not so easy to find. Enter the Science and Engineering complex through the junction with Baily Hall (right across from the gym). Go down the stairwell and follow the hallway to the first door on the left side. The door is just past two windows, is painted maroon, and may have a "LESS+MoRE" sign posted to it.
Dec. 18, 2007
Commercial Web Sites
If your personal webspace contains any material that could be considered commercial, we encourage you to register a domain name for your website. A domain costs approximately $8 a year.
You can continue using VU to host your website for free. Just tell your domain registrar to set the 'A' record for your site to point to our web server (149.106.193.12). Then, write to vu-admin(a)vu.union.edu and let us know so we can configure things properly at our end.
By having your website run from a separate domain name, you can ensure that the commercial aspects of your website will not violate any of Union's policies.

DNS Updates
Some of the changes noted on Nov. 27th are starting to take place. Please SSH to users.vu.union.edu instead of vu.union.edu. Please reconfigure your email programs to use the server at: mail.vu.union.edu for POP3/IMAP accounts.
Additionally, email sent to the vu.union.edu domain may not arrive today. We hope that this problem will be fixed for us soon, and we thank you for your patience.
Dec. 8, 2007
Email Delayed
To help combat spam, a new type of email filter has been installed. It may delay the delivery of your mail by 5-10 minutes, but we expect it to help cut down significantly on spam received by VU. Note that this will not delay mail sent to you from @union.edu or @vu.union.edu accounts.

New Webmail / Migration Completion Info
A new webmail program has been installed at: https://mail.vu.union.edu/webmail. Please test it out and let us know what you think.
The migration will be completed during the week of December 10th. At that time, you should update your local email program to switch from using vuser.vu.union.edu as the mail server (switch to: mail.vu.union.edu). Additionally, if you connected to vuser.vu.union.edu for SSH, you should change your program's settings to connect to users.vu.union.edu instead.
By the 17th, mail.vu.union.edu will be the mail exchange for the vu.union.edu domain, and www.vu.union.edu will be pointing to web.vu.union.edu. Finally, vu.union.edu will point to users.vu.union.edu. The vuser and virtual hosts will remain available in their current configuration for at least a year.

Virtual Migration Notice
Happy thanksgiving. The database server has been moved to web.vu.union.edu, and the address www.vu.union.edu will soon resolve to web.vu.union.edu. Test your websites by going to http://web.vu.union.edu/~yourname and make sure it still works correctly. If you use a database on your website, change it to use the new server.
If you have a .my.cnf file that has the host set to virtual, you should change it to web or else you will get a "can't connect to MySQL server" error when you run the mysql command.
Seven of the seventy-four databases were not migrated. If you have a yourname.sql file in your home directory, you are one of those lucky people. You'll need to import your data on your own.
If you have any questions, send an email to vu-admin at vu.union.edu

Updates/todo
- LDAP replication working on app server.
- Documented replication configuration/set-up, sent to team.
- Wrote mysql periodic force restart script for virtual's mysql system which has been acting up since the last VUFS crash.
- Wrote mk-proj-vps script for rapid VPS creation on Projects.
- Fixed Bind9 configuration on file server so that it doesn't log nonsense.
- Email system update: email works now (correctly) on mail server. Users system is configured correctly to use mail server as smarthost. Email on that system can become "live" as soon as: spool files are migrated, DSPAM is configured correctly, and an IMAP/POP3 server supporting SSL is installed/configured and MX record for vu.union.edu is updated. Also need to do something about mailing lists---mailman migration. Are we using a virtual domain or not?
- Union ITS set correct DNS settings for us; opened ports.
- Daniel's serial connection to app/file servers now wrapped via screen.
- Installed local chat server on users system for helping users.
- The vu-help command on users can be updated to provide more useful information.

Vuser/Virtual Retirement Warning
The vuser/virtual/vufs system is being retired. We are in the process of migrating accounts, software and services to the new system. Please write to vu-admin at vu.union.edu with requests for available software and services on the new equipment. i.e., if there's something you use on vuser/virtual right now that you can't live without, we'd like to know. Please use subject "NEW VU REQUEST".
Please also try connecting (ssh) to users.vu.union.edu to verify that you have access to the new system.

VUFS Disk Failure (a new one!)
Another disk in VUFS failed, causing downtime until the following day.
We don't have any more disks of the type used in the VUFS array, so we decided to expedite the migration to the new VU system. Since the previous VUFS crash, we've been running nightly back-ups to the new system. The switch-over was failrly painless.
VUFS is now completely unavailable. All services that depended on VUFS (such as the member list and disk hog pages on our website) will be migrated over to the new system when we have a chance.
Oct. 8, 2007
VUFS Disk Failure (follow-up)
Over night, VUFS became unavailable again. The controller must have run out of memory during the RAID rebuild. The RAID rebuild finally finished this afternoon, and VUFS is now back up without any disk problems (for now). We now don't have a hot spare available for VUFS, so if this happens again, we'll be in trouble. A power supply in VUFS is on its last legs. A disk in virtual is on its way out. We've run out of disk space on our backups server.
We are expediting our migration to the new VU equipment given these recent problems. Issues that need to be resolved with the new equipment: New hard disks needed to replace the ones that failed in the new box. Routing/networking issue needs to be fixed. After these are resolved, we can move everything over. In the mean time, as Chris Fernandes would say, "pray to whatever god you believe in" that the disks in the old VU equipment hang in there...
Another VUFS outage occurred Monday around 7:30pm when syncadm zero'ed out the passwd file on both virtual and vufs. A recovery was possible without reboot on virtual, but vufs needed to be taken down again. We're currently working on a backup solution to the new file system server for all three primary machines...
Oct. 7, 2007
VUFS Disk Failure
VUFS went down when one of the disks failed. There was a hot spare available to the RAID controller, but for some reason it was unconfigured as a hot spare. It was reconfigured as a spare, the controller was reset, and it is currently rebuilding the array. Email, web, file services are now available, though they may be very slow until the rebuild finishes. Hopefully no other disks will fail, because we don't own anymore of this kind of disk. We're also hoping that we'll be able to migrate to the new VUFS sooner than later. Control-L is important when connecting that thing.
Sep. 30, 2007
Major migration update
The new LDAP-based user/system management infrastructure is finished. It combines our multiple user databases and distribution mechanisms into one database/software package, and the management front-end is a single program, extensible to be able to accomodate future needs.

Continued progress on major hw upgrades
Two additional AJ machines added to the rack, completing the rack installations. Received two PDU's from CDW that cleanly mount in the rack; these PDUs have 15 electrical outlets each. Unfortunately the fan unit ordered does not fit the rack, but we can use wire to suspend the fans from the roof and this should get the job done. Additional 300GB hard disk added to new file server. Have yet to resize RAID, LVM, EXT3 on it. Fall 2007 will begin configuration of new servers. Expecting 8GB user quotas on new file server.

Schenectady Power Outage
A power outage occurred at 8:10am in Schenectady and affected the Union campus. Please bear with us while we bring the filesystem back up. Update: 1:30pm - everything should be working now.
Apr. 19, 2007
4GB Hard Quotas on VUFS
A hard quota has been set at 4GB for most users; soft quota at 3.5GB. If you have trouble saving data, check your usage space using the `quota` command, and delete files if necessary. The quota is necessary in order to prevent people from filling up VUFS, which causes major problems with email.

Major room rearrangement
This has been a crazy weekend for VU---beginning with a machine shop visit on Friday (thanks to Pat Lingane for drilling perfect holes into our rails), to mounting five of the AJ machines in the rack, to a complete rearrangement of the room. The rearrangement was long needed and now we have space to comfortably work on the rack. We also now have space for for five independent workstations (with seating) which will allow up to five club members to work on VU system management at a time, on-site. There is now also enough clear table space for repairing/upgrading equipment. In other words, we can finally work as a club again, rather than just as a service provider---very exciting! During this rearrangement period there have been many, many service outages, but these were all related to changing power and communications sources---so things should be good now. The new rack full of servers will enable us to provide even better service, and experiment with new technologies.
Mar. 16, 2007
Update on Upgrade Process
A few months ago we moved the new rack into the machine room and cleared out a lot of accumulated trash. The two new primary machines are installed in the rack, and we're waiting for rails for the remaining equipment. We've also ordered a new gigabit switch for the rig, and by early Spring term we should be able to begin installing all the new equipment. The new power supply for Projects has finally arrived, and we're working on bringing Projects back to life. The new Greek Life, IFC, Panhel and MGC websites will be hosted by Virtual U.

VUFS is Back
After about a month of operating without a passwd file, VUFS is now fully functional, thanks to Nick Potvin's heroic restoration of /etc/passwd. New accounts can now be created at this time. Apologies to those waiting for a new account.

Campus Network Connectivity Restored
Network connectivity has been restored as of 11:30AM this morning. There have been sporadic internet outages for the entire campus, including VU ever since Thursday night. It turns out it was a faulty card in our ISP's router all should be back to normal now.
Oct. 14, 2002
Power Outage
Sunday Night, the 13th, the campus lost power; despite lack of electricity, the VU backup batteries kept our machines up the whole time. Any inaccesibility was related to external network hardware not associated with VU.

PPP up and running - WinSCP guide posted
Just a few quick updates today. PPP is up and running and we are in the process of writing documentation. Only the XP guide is up at the momment, but others should soon follow. Check here for more information:
Also as some of you might know, ITS has finally disabled telnet and ftp from off-campus locations. We've posted a guide to using WinSCP, a freely available ftp-like program that allows the transfer of files securely over SSH. The guide is available here:
As usual, please contact vu-admin with any questions you may have.

Unplanned Outage
VU briefly lost network connectivity this morning from approximately 6 AM till Noon due to a tripped circuit breaker on an overloaded circuit. The circuit powers all the networking equipment for the machine room, Tardis, and several monitors.
The networking rack has since been moved over to one of VU's massively overkill UPS's. The unplanned downtime was also used to perform some quick maintenance on Vuser.

New Boot Mirrors; PPP Access Returns
Over this past weekend, new raid controllers and drives were installed in both virtual and vuser. The old drives from vuser and virtual were moved into FS, so now all of the main machines are booting off RAID1 arrays. Safe, secure, and even a bit faster :-)
Also, PPP is now up and running, with dialup access again a possibility. Only two lines are working as of now, but we'll look into the others in the coming weeks. A detailed HOWTO on how to log in using ppp should be up shortly.
Thanks for bearing with us over the weekend as we performed the upgrades. The server info page will be updated shortly with names and pictures of all of the cool new toys....

Coming Upgrades / Outages
VU will be going down briefly tonight to prepare for the upgrades being performed this weekend. Service should resume in under one hour.
Concerning the weekend, our plan is to work on the systems during the day, but leave them up and running in the evenings and at night. Regular service should resume sunday afternoon.
If you'd like to see what's going on, or even to lend a hand...feel free. We'll be in the back of the OLD CS Lab.

Break-In Attempt
This past friday, a break-in attempt was launched from a student's machine on-campus. Information on the attepted break-in has been forwarded to ITS for further investigation, and the users account on vu has been locked indefinately.
Vu-admin wants to remind you that unapproved port scanning, and ANY hacker-like behavior is subject to immediate account revocation (Vuser and Idol), along with possible disiplinary action.
Note that port scanning and similar behaviors are strictly forbidden in the union college acceptable use policy available here.
For any questions, don't hesitate to email vu-admin.

VUFS Problems
We've been having a bit of trouble with our file server since yesterday, so please bear with us for a bit. We think it should be ok now, but more downtime is still a possibility.
Mar. 22, 2002
Vuser Kernel Upgrade
The kernel on vuser was upgraded to 2.4.17 today after 108 days of uptime. As usual, be sure to let us know if something is wrong.
Also, discussions are underway as to what this years budget will be used for. A few ideas on the table include boot mirrors for the 3 main machines, a UPS upgrade or perhaps a gigabit ethernet backbone. Let vu-admin know if you have any ideas.

IBM Donates 48 Node Supercomputer to VU
Due to some shrewd negotiating by your fearless VU admins, IBM has graciously decided to donate a 48 node RS/6000 Supercomputer to Virtual Union.
We apologize that we can not make the machine available to the general VU membership...but that would mean far less play time for us.
Do trust us though....it IS down here :-)
Feb. 28, 2002
Virtual Software Upgrades
Over the past week, Apache was completely recompiled, adding support for gd 2.0 and db3 dbm handlers. The kernel was also upgraded to 2.4.17 for no real good reason what-so-ever.
Should you run into problems with the new compile, or need additional software on vuser + virtual ... please let vu-admin know.
Aug. 23, 2001
Recent Vuser Outage
Concerning the recent outage; vuser was blocked at the router by OCS for spamming. The "spam" in this case was a single advertisement sent to one of our mailing lists, that was then distributed to all it's members. In order to satisfy OCS we've disabled all mailing lists except vu-admin until we get some sort of anti-spam filters in place.
Hopefully next time OCS will give us some warning before pulling the plug. It's hard to fix things when you can't log in.

New Kernels, New Array Controller
Well over the weekend we got a few things accomplished. First off, the new raid controller has been installed and is working out quite well. The 140GB array is back as you know it, but this time with an additional hot spare drive.
Secondly, kernels on all 3 machines were upgraded so that we could take advantage of the improved firewalling tools in the 2.4 series. If anything is't working out for you, let us know.
Lastly, the members page now works! We're going to try to alphabetize it as well as remove dead links, but hey...it's pretty cool as is.
May. 17, 2001
Virtual Union Meeting
Vu will be holding a general meeting today at 7:00 in the CS lab. On the agenda will be the election of 2001-2002 officers as well as a general tour and information session. All current members and anyone interested are encouraged to attend.
Apr. 24, 2001
On-Campus Software Mirror
Since we had a number of the old drives sitting around doing nothing, we decided to set up an on-campus mirror for free software. Right now we've got isos for RH 7.1 and freebsd 4.2 up there with RH 7 and Mandrake 8.0 to follow. We figure if the first person who downloads a new release can put it on vu, it can make it easy for everyone else.
http://www.vu.union.edu/mirrors/
Note this mirror is only accessable from on campus. OCS wouldn't be happy if we started to get linked by everyone :-) Should you have some software (freely distributed) that you wish to share, please email vu-admin.

Virtual Upgrades - FS Downgrades
Over the weekend, virtual was upgraded to dual xeon 733's and a gig of ram with only a few small hitches.
As it turned out however, our new superadvanced raid controller proved to be a bit too advanced and have fairly poor documentation. Basicly, we couldn't figure it out. Software raid has been set up on FS in the interm until we can figure this thing out.
Lastly, i regret to inform those waiting... all hidden files on the old array were not retrievable. By the time we got to it, two of the drives in the old array had failed, rendering the array unusable.

Geekstock 2! : Coming Vu Upgrades
Just letting the 4 of you that actually read the news page know that Vu will be down this weekend for upgrades to FS and virtual.
We don't have exact times yet, but certainly begining no earlier then 3:00 friday afternoon. and ending no later then 6:00 on sunday.

Pop3 Access Enabled
After some delay, vuser has finaly been configured for pop3 support. Perhaps now you can trim down on those 100MB mail spools...
On a side note, pop3 from off-campus is only supported over SSL. You will need to use an email client capable of pop3 over SSL. More details can be found in the VUFAQ.

Webalizer Fully Integrated
Webalizer has been fully integrated into our site and long longer sticks out like the hack job it once was. Now what's with the heavy web traffic at 4 AM?
Also, pictures from the machine room have been posted so you can finaly appreciate the servers for the beutiful pieces of machenery that they are.
Projects in the works include finaly getting ppp working again as well as a hardware upgrade for virtual. Maybe one of these day's we'll even get the members page doing something useful.
