Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions that we've received quite a bit on the vu-admin email address.
Help! Everything was working fine until December 10th, 2007
vuser.vu.union.edu is being phased out; please start using users.vu.union.edu for SSH/SFTP, and use mail.vu.union.edu for IMAP/POP3.
If you started getting "could not connect to server" errors, it is likely because the address "vu.union.edu" no longer receives SSH connections. You must change your SSH client to use the new users.vu.union.edu address.
Why can't I connect using telnet?
Instead of telnet, please use SSH to connect to our users.vu.union.edu host. SSH is a secure replacement for telnet.
We recommend using PuTTY for Windows and the built-in terminal in Mac OS X. For more information on how to connect to VU using SSH, refer to the getting on the shell document.
Why can't I connect using ftp?
You can, but only from on campus. We suggest using SFTP/SCP to connect to your VU storage space from any Internet-connected location.
On Windows, we suggest using WinSCP. On Mac, we suggest using Fugu. Please refer to our accessing files document for detailed instructions on how to use these programs.
Why can't i retrieve my mail using Outlook, Eudrora...etc?
You can.
Note that recently POP3 became permanently unavailable for off-campus use. It is still available on campus. To continue using a standard email client with your VU email, we suggest using Secure IMAP.
Please refer to the mail server help page for more information on how to use VU email.
